A New Era in Greek Maritime Services

What began with a single vessel in the port of Piraeus has grown, over more than 50 years of maritime activity, into one of Greece's most complete marine services organisations. IGMAR Group, operating under the leadership of President Ignatios Spanopoulos, now runs the most experienced privately owned tug fleet in the country alongside world-class shipyard facilities in Salamina and Perama. Today, driven by the next generation, a new era has begun: broader reach, stronger capabilities, and an unwavering commitment to the shipowners, charterers, and yacht managers who trust IGMAR with their most critical operations.

More Than 50 Years of Maritime Activity

The history of IGMAR Group is rooted in the Spanopoulos maritime tradition, a story that begins before the Second World War when Captain C.I. Spanopoulos, a refugee from Constantinople, arrived in Greece. Through hard work and sacrifice, he built a maritime enterprise from a single launch in Piraeus. His sons carried that foundation forward through the 1980s, expanding into floating cranes and harbour construction and establishing a presence across Central, Northern, and Southern Greece.

While our maritime roots trace back to 1976, IGMAR Group represents the modern, dynamic evolution of that legacy. Over the decades that followed, the organisation grew steadily: new tugs commissioned, shipyard facilities constructed in Salamina and then Perama, certification frameworks adopted, and a professional team of over 1,000 skilled specialists built to sustain operations at the highest standards. That continuity of development is not incidental. It is the operational foundation on which every current contract rests.

Two Divisions. One Standard.

IGMAR Group operates through two specialist divisions, each with its own facilities, fleet, and technical capability, but governed by a single integrated quality, safety, and environmental management system.

  • IGMAR Towage: harbour and ocean towage, salvage and emergency response, firefighting, oil spill response, and offshore support across Greek ports and international waters, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year

  • IGMAR Shipyards: drydocking, ship repair and refit, newbuilding, conversions, yacht services, and hull and mechanical works at facilities in Salamina and Perama

The two divisions are operationally complementary. A vessel that calls at a Greek port for tug assistance may return to IGMAR Shipyards in Salamina for repair and refit. The same professional standards, the same certification framework, and the same expectation of performance apply across both.

29 Vessels. 1,000 Professionals. One Organisation.

The numbers behind IGMAR Group reflect the scale of the organisation and the depth of its operational capability. IGMAR Towage operates 29 vessels with bollard pull of up to 75 tonnes across Greek ports and international waters. IGMAR Shipyards employs over 1,000 skilled professionals across the Salamina and Perama facilities, covering naval architecture, mechanical and electrical engineering, hull and structural work, and project management.

These are not headline figures assembled for a brochure. They represent an organisation that has sustained continuous operations across multiple business cycles, market downturns, and industry changes since 1976. That continuity requires infrastructure, people, and financial commitment that short-term operators cannot replicate.

Certifications and Operational Standards

IGMAR Group operates under an Integrated Safety, Quality and Environmental Management System (SQEMS) that governs procedures across both divisions. Certifications include:

  • ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System, certified by ABS Quality Evaluations

  • ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System, certified by LRQA

  • OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational Health and Safety Management System, certified by LRQA

  • ISM Document of Compliance issued by the International Shipping Bureau

  • Operations approved by flag state administrations, classification societies, and Port State Control Officers worldwide

These certifications define how IGMAR Group operates, not just how it presents itself. Audit cycles, training requirements, incident reporting, and continuous improvement targets are embedded in daily operations across the fleet and shipyard facilities.

A New Era, Built on What Works

To meet the increasingly complex demands of global shipping, we haven’t just adapted; we have strategically evolved. IGMAR Group represents the next bold chapter in a 50-year legacy. By refining our operational structure into highly specialised divisions, we offer unparalleled focus, agility, and technical expertise in towage and shipyard operations.

The next generation of leadership brings expanded technical ambition, a stronger commercial network, and a forward-looking investment programme to a platform built on five decades of earned maritime experience. The shipyard facilities are expanding. The fleet is developing. The standards remain exactly as they have always been.
